How irregular moons can be captured by Jupiter

An explanation of the 2007 study of capture direction for irregular satellites in orbital dynamics.

Jupiter and orbital paths of small bodies around the planet.
Irregular Satellites of Jupiter: a study of the capture direction · Scientific publication · 2007
01 / EXPLANATION

The research question

Irregular satellites travel on distant, inclined orbits around giant planets. The study examined whether a small body’s initial direction of motion changes the conditions under which Jupiter can capture it.

02 / EXPLANATION

How the problem was studied

The work uses the restricted three-body problem as an approximation: the Sun and Jupiter dominate the gravitational field, while the satellite is small enough not to alter their motion. Numerical simulations vary initial conditions and compare trajectories.

03 / EXPLANATION

What the result supports

Capture direction is a dynamical condition that can be tested in orbital models. The institutional record confirms the publication and co-authorship. This page explains the question and method without replacing the paper or extending its conclusions.
